NARS Sheer Lipstick Damage

For a sheer lipstick lover who prefers cool-toned colors like me, NARS Sheer Lipstick Damage can easily achieve an "essential" status.
Dolce Vita seems to appeal to a bigger mass supposedly being a "universally flattering" shade, but unfortunately "Life isn't so sweet" on me. If you find Dolce Vita too warm on you, do take a look at Damage instead. It is the Dolce Vita for cool/neutral complexions.

NARS Sheer Lipstick
I like the lightweight lipstick tube of NARS. It is not Chanel (the brand that makes my favorite lipstick tube, not the formula, btw) but clean and functional.
(And I naturally think about the newly launched Audacious Lipsticks, which are housed in the matte metallic cases with magnetic closure. Cool, right? It won't be as cool if I end up concluding I'm paying $6 more for a heavier lipstick tube, though. In other words, the formula has to be amazing. You know, the expectations you'd have for a $32 lipstick.)

NARS Sheer Lipstick Damage before the "damage"
(There is something beautiful and holy about an untouched lipstick bullet. My friend Hélène seems to share the same opinion.)

NARS Sheer Lipstick Damage Swatch
NARS describes Damage as "a muted grape". Again, the description is painfully simple that makes me scream "No, it is so much more than that!". But, look at it. It IS a muted grape. Oh, well.

On my lips, it pulls more pink, though.
It also has a hint of brown undertone which makes Damage a more complex shade.

NARS Sheer Lipstick is one of my favorite sheer lipstick formulations. I think the price ($26) is reasonable for this excellent formula. Many sheer glossy lipsticks dry out the lips later on, but NARS Sheer Lipstick does not. It has no particular scent nor taste. I find the application is great with just a perfect amount of slip on the lips.

Damage is a subtle shade that is super easy to wear but possesses some dark smoky quality as well. I would imagine this is the color a vampire girl would wear when she goes to school during the day.

  1. Such a pretty shade! I was not a big fan of dolce vita but this definitely looks more up my alley! Love the full look on you!

    1. Thank you, Elle. :)
Dolce Vita almost looks orange brown on me (not a rose), so I was disappointed! I think you'd like Damage if you're looking for more of a purple pink.

  2. So pretty! And I totally agree with you, an untouched lipstick bullet is a beautiful thing. ;D I love how you described it. It really does look like what a sexy vampire would wear everyday. ^^

This also makes a great glossy top coat for more intense vampy stains I often wear. It would look very pretty on your complexion, I think.

  3. These kinds of shades can sometimes make me look older (or dead :P) so I tend to stay away from them. But I like sheer lipstick finishes, too, and sometimes I think the finish can save a shade! You look lovely, Lena :)

    1. Aw, really? Actually Dolce Vita does that to me. ;-/
I totally agree. It has to be a right combination of color and finish.
      Thank you, Larie. :)

  4. I tried this on the other day and would have bought it if I'm not trying to be picky. It looks much smokier and grapier on you! (Kind of looked like a regular neutral type on me.)

    1. It seems Damage is a nice MLBB shade for many people as well. I guess it is the beauty of sheer lipstick.
I like the grapiness(?) of this color a lot. It's slightly edgy even.
I am more attracted to the old colors from NARS and relatively not as interested in the new Audacious or the Dual Intensity. It's probably because of my makeup tendencies - I get scared of full coverage lipsticks and don't use eyeshadows wet.

  5. This is such a gorgeous shade! Thank you for bring it to my attention. It really reminds me f Macs 'Mystical' which was limited edition. I am definitely going to check this one out.

I didn't know about the MAC shade but I'm glad to hear this might be a good alternative. :)

  7. Ohhh! At first glance I did thought this was Dolce Vita! If this colour is Dolce Vita for the coloer-toned skin, that's awesome! Glad that you found a replacement that works!

  8. These plum shades always look amazing on you! It's funny, I see Dolce Vita as cool-toned for an MLBB, but I think that's because my lips themselves are quite cool-toned. I've swatched Damage a couple of times, but it's much less visible on me than it is on you; I rely on Revlon Shine Lipstick in Plum Velour for the look you've achieved here with Damage.

Untouched lipstick bullets are holy objects, for sure. And NARS bullets may be holier than most. It took me an embarrassingly long time to begin using my new tube of Dolce Vita!

    1. I think that is the beauty of wearing sheer lipsticks! Your natural undertones play a big part in the finished look, and I think I like that about many of NARS makeup.
I have Plum Velour but it looks quite intense on me. I reviewed it once, I think. I should take it out again and give it another go.

I think nicks on a lipstick bullet is more heartbreaking than nail marks on a blush, for example. Also, how beautiful is a well-loved nubby lipstick? :)

    1. LOL Thanks, Tracy!
I think the finish and the texture play a really big part for finding right lippies. I don't think I can wear a similar color that is not sheer. So this might work for you, too. I have hard time imagining Damage looking unflattering on you! :)

  12. I absolutely adore sheer lipsticks and I'm a huge fan of the MAC Lustre ones. I have a few Semi-matte lipsticks from NARS - the formula is amazing, creamy, pigmented and comfortable - but I've never tried the sheer formula. Damage definitely looks like the perfect shade to begin a new obsession ;)

    1. Now you got me interested in NARS semi-matte lipsticks as well. Haha
I liked MAC Lustre when I had them. Probably my favorite from MAC. NARS sheer lipstick goes on even sheerer with a bit more slip, though. :)

  13. Damage is one of my favourites- wore it yesterday, actually! I'm a huge fan of Dolce Vita as well, but I like to switch to Damage in the Fall when I want something a bit more plummy :)

Jealous that you can pull off these two beauties! ;)

  14. This is definitely a beautiful and super wearable shade! Love the grapish undertone, I don't have anything like that which is also sheer at the same time! I haven't shelled out any money on NARS products yet but I am keen with their blushes!

Thank you so much for the link love! xoxo
I love Dolce Vita and in fact I've been wearing it all this past week. I haven't worn a grape color in ages since they kind of make me feel "been there done that" but I think Damage would be a good one to own for when I wear cooler colors. It sure looks lovely on you especially with your skin tone, Vampire Girl or not! :D

    3. Hi Hélène, my pleasures!
I love purple lippies but plummy shades don't always look good on me. Damage would be my MLBB with vampire edge. LOL

BTW, hope we can see you more on a regular basis soon. I know it will get all better soon. xoxo

  15. I love sheer lipsticks and find them much easier to apply and I don't need to be super careful(as I always apply lipstick without using a mirror). This shade is so pretty and exactly as described which is so rare these days :) I just bought the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipstick in 94 Confident and really like it. Also YSl Volupte shine in orange impertinent.

Rouge Coco Confident looks like another really awesome nude shade. I was actually eyeing on the Intimé as well.

  16. Haha I just swatched this a gigilllion times yesterday and passed on it at the end because ...I spent way too much time in Sephora and confused myself. I did think it was lovely but ended up buying a colour from Givenchy instead . This was a teeny bit too sheer for my liking but I can see how people with less pigmentation in their lips would look amazing in it. Looks gorgeous on you !

    1. Oh, Givenchy is really amping up their games recently with all the new shades and products. :)
My lips are actually quite pigmented but this sheer color and my own lip color work together to create something different, which I always find fascinating.
      Thanks for stopping by! :)
