Glossier Generation G Crush

As an unofficial Glossier dismisser, I find it's funny my Glossier Cloud Paint review gets many views here on Lenallure. While I didn't hate my Cloud Paint, I was seriously underwhelmed and have been ignoring the brand altogether ever since. Maybe I am just too old for the brand but if you ask me, the quality and the packaging of Glossier just don't justify the price point and there are better things you can spend your pretty pennies on.

Having said that, a blog friend of mine who is a lipstick (& lip gloss) expert really seems to enjoy the Generation G formulation so I caved in and got myself a Generation G/Boy Brow set. The shipping was very fast since it arrived in 2 days! I said no to those stickers and appreciated that now there is an option to do so.

The formulation of Generation G is certainly interesting. I can see you either love it or hate it. The idea is "a blotted lipstick finish without blotting". I blot my lippies all the time for a natural and more youthful finish so I understand the need for this type of lipstick. The finish is powdery but at the same time a tiny bit sticky. It feels surprisingly comfortable on the lips. The color may be sheer but it lasts pretty well. It seems to have the perfect amount of silicones and pigment for the desired finish. I have to say the application is rather draggy and some might find it offputting as you need to swipe more than a few times with this one.

Crush is a gorgeous flushed pink with a clear base that would look nice on many different complexions. The swatch above was made with 2-3 swipes.

I was caught off guard by the fragrance chosen for this lipstick. I expected some vanilla or even fruity ones but it smells like an oldschool powdery floral. Although it is faint and quickly dissipates, there is this powder stank to it. (Yes, powder stank is a thing.)

Now, I think I would have liked Generation G much more if I hadn't experienced something similar but better. There are two comparable "sheer daily matte" formulations in my stash, one from the KBeauty range and the other from the higher-end. To be fair, all three are different animals but in the sense that these are meant to create that sheer comfortable matte finish, Generation G is paled by both.

Today, I will show you a comparison swatch of Generation G Crush to Romand See Through Matte Tint ($10.90, YesStylePink Fold. Amazingly enough, they are essentially the same shade. The Romand tint has a softer cream texture and yields more pigment per application, but you can achieve pretty much the same result by sheering it out.

(See? I wasn't lying.)

Of course, unlike Generation G, the Romand tint requires the "sheering out" step for the same finish, but it is more versatile since you can easily go for a more pigmented finish as well (I will show it to you in a dedicated post because the Romand deserves it). And, I have to say the blurring effect and the comfort level are also slightly better.

Bottom line Glossier Generation G is a unique and useful lipstick to have. I really like the Crush shade and will continue to use it. Actually, it would be the most practical lipstick choice under mask next to nothing. It's just that it didn't wow me that I would change my opinion on the brand.

Thanks for being here. I hope you are staying healthy and happy.

  1. Going to read your Cloud Paint review now. I am new to Glossier and they seem to get a good reception online, so I am intrigued to see if they are worth the hype.

Crush looks lovely on you and I'm starting to get into sheerer lipsticks at the moment. I know it's not as versatile because it is already sheered out, but I think that takes out some of the leg work as you can apply it and you're good to go! xx

    1. Some brands just don't click with me much (For example, I agree Charlotte Tilbury is great and I keep looking at them but her stuff didn't work for me as well except for a few). If you like minimalistic packagings and care free makeup styles, you might enjoy Glossier. For makeup, I'd rather buy MAC or explore more of Korean and Japanese drugstore ranges. I hear many good things about Glossier skincare, though. :)

  2. I think I did order Pink Fold (yesstyle packaging that's lost amid the pandemic)...I think I will wait five more days before (two months already) asking for refund...My hope isn't too high because remember I raved about the gloss stain, I don't reach for it at the end...So it's either something I reach for or something I don't.

    1. Awwww, really!!? I really hope it shows up at your doorstep! I totally get what you mean - I find myself not reaching for something although I truly think it's great then reach for another which I think is just meh. LOL. Generation G is fuss free, I think. I see young folks carrying them in the pocket as they go. The Romand feels even watery at first so I'd say the formula is clearly different. For lipstick, I have YSL The Slim Sheer Matte and I like them a lot. :)
