More of an amber: Chanel Joues Contraste 89 Canaille

When introduced in 2014, this limited edition color was clearly described as a "burnt orange" by Chanel. It looked orange from the pan and swatched orange so that I even featured Canaille in an orange-themed collective post before. Canaille is an intense and gorgeous color which totally deserves a spot in my blush collection. However, I assumed it would be one of my novelty items (like Chanel Joues Contraste Rouge - reviewed here) and never thought I would reach for it as often as I do now.

To my surprise, Canaille appears more of an amber on my cheeks. (No, amber and orange are not the same thing. ) Which makes this formidably pigmented color so much more wearable for me.

I pulled out my other amber-y blush NARS Unlawful (reviewed here) for comparison. Canaille is more pigmented with subtle shimmer. You can slapdash with Unlawful, but I must say Canaille produces more desirable effects if you can afford more time for application.

Nowadays deep purple smokey eyes are not enough to liven the complexion if I am decided on a light neutral lip color for the day. I need glowing flushed cheeks on top of deeper smokey eyes to look alive. I often choose Canaille for the purpose.

An example here:

Base: Lunasol Skin Modeling Liquid Foundation in OC01 (available on eBay), Chacott Finishing Powder in Clear, Rouge Bunny Rouge Highlighting Powder in Goddess
Eyebrow: ebony drawing pencil
Eyes: Urban Decay Primer Potion Anti-Aging, L'Oreal Voluminous Smoldering Line in Grey, Stila eyeshadow Tone, Etude House Look At My Eyes in Romance in Budapest, Prestige Total Intensity eyeliner in Powerful Purple, Etude House Pink Skull Curl Fix Mascara (available on eBay)
Cheeks: Chanel Joues Contraste 89 Canaille (available on eBay)

Canaille goes nicely with a floppy hat, too. (I bought it for under $17 on sale from Nordstrom. For the price, it is amazing. I highly recommend it.)

I am continuously impressed by Chanel Joues Contraste blushes. I tend to overlook the occasional shortcomings of Chanel formulations for their uniquely beautiful colors. It is not the case for this unexpectedly amazing blush.

  1. Canaille actually looks a little daunting in the package but it's super pretty on you especially paired with those smokey eyes. I have yet to dip into the world of Chanel blushes and now I feel like I might be missing out LOL Merry Christmas to you Lena! May your holidays be joyous, safe and warm!

    1. Canaille is very pigmented and does require careful application. It blends in quite well, though! I still hesitate to pay the full price for Chanel blushes. So far everything I've tried is amazing. I wanna to have at least one more that is easier to wear.

Thank you for the wishes. May 2017 bring wonderful things to all of us! :)

  3. Wow, I'm with Lily! I can't think of anything I own that is remotely close to this kind of shade. I love it on you, such a beautiful glow.

    1. Thank you, Mimi. :) Nowadays I am all about adding some unusual colors to my humble blush collection. Cool-toned pink is still easiest to wear, but I have too many of those, you know? I actually adore European formulation of Joues Contraste. It never fails to give subtle and realistic glow to the complexion.

    1. LOL. I thought the same when I first opened it. I still need a very light hand to apply this, but thanks to the amazing texture it isn't too bad.

  5. It's so perfect on you! LOVE! I never thought to call these shades Amber, but you are so right! I think my fave amber shade would be Burberry Russet. It's one I reach for often.

    1. Thank you, Tracy! I just looked up Burberry Russet. It looks amazing. I think these colors tend to look ruddy or uneven on people with fair skin tones. A better formula has to be there for us to make it work. And this is the point where I'm willing to spend a bit more. ;p

  7. Looks gorgeous on you! I haven't invested in Chanel blushes yet, but I'm more and more intrigued to as they seem to come out with a lot nude-brown-orange blushes which I've been loving lately. Unlawful wasn't my favorite blush, I found it too chunky for my taste. Maybe I'll give it another go as it looks pretty in the swatch.

ps. sorry for posting multiple times, I wasn't sure if my WP account works >_<

    1. Hi, Laura! Thanks for the comment. :)

I have a love/hate relationship with Unlawful as well. It does have a quite different texture from other NARS blushes I own. Still I think it is a very unique color, which I suspect why this LE color made into their core collection.

(I didn't see multiple comments. No worries! WP is supposed to work, but do let me know if you have further issues.)

  8. Wow that is such a resplendent colour on you. That is the kind of colour I'd turn away from at th counter, but seeing it on you now, I'm going to have to rethink prior prejudices

    1. Thanks! I usually find pigmented warmer blushes VERY hard to pull off. I wouldn't say Canaille is the easiest but the end result is worth the extra effort.

  9. I LOVE THAT HAT. I have one too, but I haven't found much reason to wear it, lol! Do you just wear it out? I'm not that brave.

I love russet tones like this, too! I bought both of the NARS palettes and I've been really liking them, because of the variety, so I'm kind of having a, uh, blush-forward moment.

    1. Thanks! I have no problem wearing it out (weirdly enough, floppy hats look least weird on my head), but I've found a different problem - floppy hats tend to flop away if it's too windy. What it the point... It is still a great hat since I paid only about 17 dollars.

Loving "blush-forward moment". Like you, I keep looking at warmer colors and covet them. So much has changed in this world. ;)
