Review, Swatch - Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm Vivacious

It seems the "chubby stick/crayon" trend in makeup is still going strong as I see almost every brand has one out by now. I myself have been paying attention to other types of hybrids like liquid lip colors or gloss stains.
This was one of those impulse buys that I forced myself into, because I couldn't possibly pass up the BOGO 50% sale (which happens every other week, btw).
I guess I was curious to see what the hype was about the (relatively) new Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm myself.

Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm
Vivacious

My drugstore downstairs is usually well-stocked and clean, but I could barely find one stick that wasn't opened or tested already. I mean, a tester would be desirable, but I would be fine with shrink-wrapped lippies, too.

Vivacious was the color of my (non)choice.

Luckily, it is a very pretty strawberry red

Revlon Lacquer Balm boasts to be a "high shine lacquer, moisture rich balm".
The color indeed is on the vibrant side and goes on evenly, which is maybe true to its "lacquer" identity, but it kind of falls short in "shine and moisture" department.
The finish is shinier than the Balm Stain, which is the first chubby sister that Revlon came out with, but it is more of a sheen than "high shine".
Revlon Lacquer Balm is supposed to keep my lips comfortable and moisturized with its "triple butter complex", and it does so initially. Unfortunately, this isn't very long lasting. Soon, within a few hours, my lips start to feel parched once the initial shine wears off. I think it is interesting that the Balm Stain feels more comfortable on lips although it has less slip than the Lacquer Balm.

I really like how light it feels on my lips, though.
Vivacious is quite intense but easy to wear thanks to the semi-sheer color payoffs.

But wait, didn't we see a very similar color recently?
I thought so, too.

If I am not colorblind, Revlon Lacquer Balm Vivacious and Revlon Moisture Stain Barcelona Nights (reviewed here) are identical in color.
I am not very surprised since Revlon has been doing this for years now.

Overall look

High shine?
I don't think so.

It would be only fair to say Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm is a nice lippie for its price, but the formula is less than perfect for me. I see myself reaching for the Moisture Stain more often if I feel like a bright pink red lip color.

Have you tried Revlon ColorBurst Lacquer Balm?
What is your favorite lip color in a "crayon" form?

  1. I have this shade as well but it doesn't look very flattering on me - too berry-ish, more of a fall colour! I didn't like the minty/plumping property of the formula and the moisturizing property that Revlon claims is totally off for me :( I had more success with the matte balms - have you tried those?

    1. I haven't tried the mattes and it won't be soon. I think that minty sensation is quite common in lip products with stains. I personally don't mid it much but I need something less drying on my lips! :)

    1. Oh, so I am not alone. I've heard so many good things about this so I was about to doubt myself. LOL
I really like color, too. The hint of warmth really suits the season. :)

  3. I have yet to try any of these crayon-type lippes since I have a large stash already. This color is great on you!

    1. I think it is about the convenience and the cute appearance overall. I personally like something more moisturizing and shiny.

  4. Yeah i was disappointed in both the lacquer and the matte balms, they just dont live up to the balm stains to me :( the color selection however is nice but i held myself from purchasing more than one of each

    1. It's too bad, isn't it?
I personally prefer the original Balm Stain much more. This one doesn't dry out my lips and makes a great lip base for long lasting color.

  5. I got the same shade for this formula - I liked the original better as well :\ ! Bit of a let down indeed.

    1. Glad to hear I am not the only one.
The Balm Stain goes on almost matte but somehow it doesn't make my lips peel off. :)

  6. I bought the lacquer balm in color Tease while I was in Indonesia and I must say I dislike the minty scent and feeling.. but formula wise, I think it is fine for the price.. it wears comfortable but def not very long wearing..
Vivacious is a beautiful color! it suits you very well :-D love it!

    1. It seems the minty thing is quite common in stain products. I mean I smell the same thing from Dior Lip Glow for example with added vanilla for example.
I agree that Revlon still is one of the finest when it comes to lippies. :)

  7. I have tried both the lacquer and matte balm and I much prefer the lacquer version. Of all the drugstore balm, think Revlon is still the best one out there. The shade is so pretty on you.

    1. I totally agree with you! And most of Revlon lippies are paraben free.
I think it is also my preference leaning towards other types of lip products. :)

  8. I only have 2 crayons (GWP) I have yet to try because honestly nothing beats a real lippy for me. I can't seem to get on board with them. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity about these I think I'll pass but I must say the color looks beautiful on you, too bad about the lack of shine but it still looks super pretty!

I think these will suit you fine if you like more of a traditional lip colors. I was expecting something more balmy and shiner because of its claim. Lacquer Balm range actually has a good selection of reds, you might find a favorite, too! :)

  9. The shade is stunning and I've been tempted but a nude and a hot pink from this lacquer range, I haven't got any yet! I'm sure the moisturizing feel wears off after a short while and a gloss on top would help. That's surprising at how the shades are the same! Exactly the same! I've never noticed!

    1. I've seen the same shades in different ranges which is fine by me. I mean, they have gorgeous colors, why not in different formulations? ;) I see the same thing from Dior, for example.
I could definitely top with gloss or balm, but I'd still prefer the Balm Stain for that. ;)

  10. Beautiful shade on for you!
I definitely prefer the original Balm Stain formula - I use them all the time. I actually stayed away from the Lacquer balms after trying them at Ulta: they didn't seem very moisturizing and a lot of them had shimmer particles, which I'm not a fan of on myself. I do like their Matte Balms though.

    1. I love the original Balm Stain! Smitten is my favorite. ;) It makes such a nice long lasting base for bright berry lips. I usually top it with glossy balm and I'm good all day!
And you're right! Some of the Lacquer Balm have really big glitters, by which I was put off.

  11. I haven't been drawn to these. My favorite chubby pencil is the Clinique Intense version :D

    1. I have yet to try the Clinique chubby sticks. Maybe I can land on some nice GWP in the future.
But seriously, there are many other forms I like better. :)

    1. Hi Jen! :) Thank you.
I think it is also my preference about different lip colors and formulas. I find this bright pink red with a bit of warmth really alluring, too. Luckily I have that in different formula. :)

  13. I think this looks really great on you, but I get that you don't like it as much as others! It works well enough for me, and I think that I was lucky to be sent a shade that I really ended up loving. I still reach for mine all the time, even though there are so many other lipsticks that deserve more love. ;O I've acquired two more lip crayon things since and they are awfully easy to use. I don't think that they'll ever go away. LOL

    1. I guess I have been spoiled by many great lippie formulas this year, too!
To be fair, this is not bad at all. It is more of a preference thing. :)
I'm very fond of this pink red with a subtle warmth. Maybe it is a good thing to have this in a few different textures after all. ;)
