I received a medium size tube of this for the third time in my makeup life. This was, of course, a part of GWP that contained a nice skincare regimen, and Simmer wasn't a selling point for me at all.
Because I knew exactly how Simmer would feel and look on me, I thought about giving it away. But the lipgloss tube looked prettier than I remembered a few years ago.
How softly it gleams! If something looked this pretty when simmering, it could be a potion of youth...
Lancôme Juicy Tubes Simmer
But alas, it is more like a potion of death on me, just like how I remembered.
Simmer washes me out.
It was actually worse this time. Soft shimmery peach was never a friendly shade for me, but I could still pull it off if I carefully played a pairing game.
I did all my usual tricks - using purply colors on the eyes, motherload of highlighter and blush - but no, I still looked tired and washed out.

To be fair, Simmer is a beautiful color on warmer and darker complexions. It is a perfect example of JLo nude. At $18 for a half oz tube with slanted tip, it is modestly priced for a department store brand lipgloss and nicely performs for what it is.
The other reason why I wanted to try Simmer again was because I thought it would be a great companion to NARS Orgasm blush.
Simmer is more of a golden beige with pink shimmer while Orgasm lipgloss is a warm pink with gold shimmer.
They both wash me out. Big difference, hmph!

I am writing this with rather a heavy heart. It is like a eulogy for my youth.
Simmer probably looked as unflattering as it does on me now, and maybe I just didn't know it back then. But I did believe I could pull off a rainbow if I had wanted to, and that was what's wonderful about my youth. Such a blissful time.
On the other hand, I remember avoiding red and brights because they just didn't look right. I find now they look okay on me.
So there, all is fine. I think I am moving on.
I will show you some bright reddish orange lipstick next time. :)
Wish everyone a beautiful week!
Maybe as a gloss over a brighter lipstick? I sometimes use awkwardly pale nude glosses to help tone down uber bright lipsticks for work!
ReplyDeleteI also hear NARS Orgasm looks so pretty over anything. But I'm so lazy that I doubt I'd do this on a regular basis. Plus the wand will get dirty...but this tube is better for that. :)
Delete:D hehe! This is like the GWP bobbi brown lip gloss (the clear one in the tube). Over time I accumulated like 1/2 dozen of those suckers. At least that one is clear.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a bad color, but you are particularly fetching in bright pinks... as you know! :)
Oh yeah..that clear gloss. I myself hardly buy anything from Bobbi Brown but I received one from a friend who's a fan. ;D
DeleteI thought aging comes in wrikles, and it does, but also it is about losing the natural colors and glow. If bright pinks can bright those back, yes, more pink for me! ;)
I can never pull off nude lip colors, either haha it's so sad because I love them on others! Honestly, I don't think it washes you out THAT much. You could pull it off, maybe over another lipstick?

It's comforting that I am not the only one. I actually prefer Armani 103 for a pale nude, which doesn't wash me out that terribly. I might try soft lip liners with Simmer. Hope it works because it is a darn pretty shade! :)
DeleteI actually like how it looks on you, Lena. It's something different and it's not as bad as you say. But if I really had to choose, I'm always up for a Lena pink :-)
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Lily! You're sweet. ;)
DeleteYeah..maybe that's what I wanted - trying something different to see that works on me as well. We all know what works best on us, but our faces constantly change that we need to keep experimenting. Who know? :)
I still think it looks lovely although perhaps you could try it over a nude or peach lipstick - I'm sure you'll find a combination that will work for you! :))
ReplyDeleteThank you, Vita.
DeleteI want to try it over soft lipliner next time. Which means I need to buy a lip liner? LOL (I currently don't have one.) :)
Aw, that's too bad you find it washes you out! I think it looks fine although it does take away some of your natural color! I've loved juiced tubes and have bought a couple mini sets but over time I found them to get quite sticky and haven't repurchased. I think I'd be nice over a lipstick but these are meant to be use alone right? Well, I'm glad you kept it for this review!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Sharlynn.
DeleteRegardless of the color, I think I need some sort of contrast between my lips and complexion to make it work.
Juicy Tubes have been around more than 10 years now. It must be good and I can see why it is so appealing...but maybe I'm past that stage. There are so many more to explore as well.
Haha, "makeup life" made me giggle. It's true, though, innit? I actually never had one of these juicy tubes, although I imagine I prolly wanted one. I don't think it looks bad on you! Kind of an alternative nude that might go nice with smokey eyes!
ReplyDeleteSo far It's been a quite blissful life. ;D
DeleteThere was a time Juicy Tubes were a big deal and people used to get excited over a special set and LE shades. Even when I exclusively wore lipgloss only, they didn't have a big pull on me, though (Not a fan of tube lipglosses).
I guess everyone needs a soft nude like Simmer. I'm encouraged to try working it one more time thanks to you guys. ;)
Aw from your photo its not as bad as you describe! But you're right it isn't as brightening as compared to your photos with brighter lip shades. I like Lancôme GWP for their skincare as well but am tired of the lip and eyeshadow options they keep throwing out, either the shades are too boring and repetitive or I find the eyeshadow quality not as good as the full size products. The Juicy Tubes were also a staple for my bff and I in school (I would buy her a set every year, in Oct/Nov Lancôme always has a holiday set of the mini sizes), they were an affordable "luxury" at that time :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Meiko! <3
DeleteI agree with you on Lancome GWP. There do this all the time so I try to be smart about what I am getting for extras (I'm paying for them too, to think about it!). This time they did nicely with a whole range or Absolu skincare. Simmer was an oddball in the bunch, actually. ;)
I actually find those Juicy Tubes minis so much more attractive than the regular size. They look like candies in a set. Makes a great gift.
I couldn't wear this type of gloss by its own, either, unless I pair it with a really intense smokey eye! :) Think intense black! LOL
ReplyDeleteI think it still looks very sweet on you, though, especially with that purple eye. You look innocent and sweet! There was a time when I was collecting these juicy tubes like crazy! Only to end up throwing them away because I couldn't use them fast enough before they went bad. LOL I think I'm all juicy-tube'd up! ;)
Thanks, Jaa! I'm thinking maybe the eyeshadows were not dark enough to counter Simmer. Anyway, thanks to my sweet bloggofriends, now I want to give it another go with different pairings. ;D
DeleteI imagine someone very young owning only one juicy tube and constantly glossing away, and she would be able to use up a tube in no time...but for us? 0.5 oz tube is too much. LOL. More reasons to look at the mini sets and start collecting mini GWP, if we're still interested in them anyway..;p
I think it's not as bad as you think it is Lena! It's soft and pretty on you! I remember when these were all the rage, but I find them too sticky and never understood the obsession people had with them.
ReplyDeleteI agree they are quite tacky. They might have been reformulated years ago, so the current ones are not that bad, though. I remember the first generation of these didn't even have slanted tips (and there were L'Oreal dupes. LOL), so I didn't pay attention to them much, either. ;p
DeleteThis looks so pretty in the tube and I thought it was going to be more pigmented on the lips. I remember when these lipglosses were super popular and I saw them everywhere. I wonder what happened to them.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't think this looks that washed out on you!
Hi Vicky :)
DeleteI'm glad to hear it doesn't look all that bad. Simmer is medium-pigmented, I guess. It if was sheerer, my natural lip color would have peeked through more.
Something like Juicy Tubes will be always around but it seems lippies have evolved over the years and we constantly look for new and better things. :)
Oh, this takes me back to those days when Juicy Tubes were THE THINGS to have. I think Simmer would look great over any lipstick! But it doesn't compare to NARS O gloss which used to be MAGIC. (I haven't tried it since they reformulated/repackaged.) I think this still looks pretty on you on its own anyway. Bet the shimmer looks pretty in real life under spring sunshine. :)
ReplyDeleteThis post and many encouraging comments actually got me into trying a few things, and although I dislike layering lip products (LAZY), wearing some soft matte liner all over works for me. Weirdly L'Oreal Wet Stain works great, too.
DeleteI still wish I could pull off this pretty color on its own, but I am moving on with those orange-y shades! ;D
I used to have a rainbow of juicy tube (I mean, I have them in yellow, green and blue in addition to the normal shades) and the jelly finish one are nice, fruity and not tacky(I hate hate the shimmery ones though) I think just forgot about those since 2010 when the color and wear of drugstores glosses started getting really good...juicy tubes were good but I never missed them.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Even those discontinued L'Oreal tubes were quite good (no wonder..they are gone now but there're are other dupes from L'Oreal I really like).
DeleteI remember seeing those slightly (and interestingly) tinted clear Juicy Tubes. I was never into tube gloss but those looked yummy. To think about it, some products really make us reminiscent about the old times. :)
it doesn't look bad in the photo! i have super light skin so it might not look great on me either, the color seems pretty though :)

Thanks Danielle. :)
DeleteThere are some other nudes and pales shades which do not wash me out as bad, yet they are as light as Simmer, which is uncanny, though. ;p
