Deborah Lippmann Sexy Back Lip and Nail Duet

Deborah Lippmann Sexy Back Duet

Much encouraged by my first experience with Deborah Lippmann lipsticks, I went ahead and ordered another lipstick/nail polish set of hers. Sexy Back Duet is a "fierce flirty fuchsia crème" duo (actually, "duo" would be more of an accurate term. Just saying) of a full size lipstick and a fashion size nail lacquer. It is another great set, and I must say this time I am more impressed with the lipstick than the nail polish.

Sexy Back Nail Lacquer

A fashion size nail lacquer is about half the full sized bottle, which makes this set a pretty awesome deal since it's like you're getting the nail polish for $2. I was even luckier because I scored the set from the recent Beauty.com sale.
On my nails, Sexy Back shows up more of a cool berry with red undertones. I thought I had a dupe but it turns out Sexy Back is totally unique in my collection. It reminds me of Revlon Cherries In The Snow a little, but Sexy Back looks modern and more flattering thanks to its creme-gel finish.
The applicator is naturally a bit shorter so that I wouldn't call the application a breeze, but it is definitely much better than those Essie minis. They have ballz inside and everything. We need ballz regardless of the size.

I don't know why I assumed the lipstick would be more opaque with satin finish. The finish is almost identical to "I'm Every Woman" (my favorite nude lipstick at the moment), which is sheer and glossy with buildable coverage.

Again, it is more of a berry than a fuchsia.
Sexy Back is not one of those "in your face" kind of fuchsia, if it is a fuchsia at all.
Honestly I've seen flirtier fuchsias than Sexy Back, but I love this bright yet wearable shade regardless.

I completely forgot to take a lip swatch pic, but here is an overall look.

If you are not so sure about Deborah Lippmann lipsticks, I would say try them. I think they are great options for sheer lipstick lovers like me. Both the nude and the bright I've tried are excellent. The only thing is the limited color range, but hopefully there will be more in the future.

  1. These colors are gorgeous on you, Lena! Beautifully cherry pink shades. What kind of lipstick would you say the DL ones are comparable to, in terms of formula and how they feel?

    1. Thanks, Larie! :)
Scent wise, it is definitely MAC. I wish I could do a MAC formula reference, though. I'd say coverage/finish wise it is close to Dior Addict and maybe NARS sheer lipsticks. The DL lipsticks I've tried all have a bit more shine. They last on me about 3 hours and feel great. HTHS! :)

    1. I thought it would be brighter, but it is a very pretty and wearable shade. I love it. :)

    1. LOL. There was a time when essie minis didn't have ballz, so it was an issue on the nail board. Two is always better than one, too. ;p

  4. Wah I didn't know Deborah Lippmann has lipsticks too :O.
The color looks very nice on you and the formulation sounds great as well.. ^^
I have tried several Deborah Lippmann nail polishes and I find them very nice but still not worth the ridiculous price tag in Europe ( €24 ) so I only buy DL nail polishes when they're on sale or clearance xDD

    1. I think they are fairly new since I only see 5 colors on the website for now. Butter London also has lippie lines but they are not that great, I hear. So I'm happy to discover lipsticks from a nail brand that actually function properly. ;)
BTW, that Europe price is just too much. Sticking with couture / local drugstore brands seems a better idea. ;o

  5. I didn't know that Deborah Lippman came out with a range of lipsticks! How great though that the are available in matching sets! I totally would have checked it out if it was available in Canada!

    1. I believe they are relatively new. I was skeptical at first but I'm glad I decided to try them. DL also offers value sets. Sephora actually has this very set. Maybe it is on the Canada site, too? ;)

    1. Some berries look aging on me but not this one. It is a cheery and youthful color that is very easy to wear.
Have a wonderful weekend yourself! :)

  7. Nice set! I've been thinking of trying Deborah Lippmann lipsticks so it's nice to see them reviewed here. Love the color but what I love more is your necklace! Where did you get it from?! Please share! :D

    1. I think it only makes sense since many of us like to match nails and lips. I'm happy they are very good quality. I definitely like them better than MAC lipsticks I've tried.

The necklace was a PR sample from POPSUGAR Must Have box a while ago. I think it's from Kendra Scott and it seems similar ones are still avail (actually she now has a lot more variations!). Thank you! :)

  8. Hey Lena, this lipstick actually doesn't look that sheer to me! The shade is beautiful on you :) We get the nail polishes here, but I'm not sure about these sets. Might have to stalk the stores a little!

    1. Thank you, Sunny. The lipstick line is fairly new and not many seem to know about it just yet. If it becomes more popular, I'm sure they will make it there. (or they might already be there! ;))
I used to favor Butter London over Deborah Lippmann, but now I like them both. DL lipsticks definitely weighed in. ;D

  9. The finish and color sound like my thing(I am guessing we have similar preferences on lippies since I even want the rimmle 110 after seeing your review/and I know the texture is bad)....now I prefer berry-leaning hot pink instead of the fuchsia one(most bright pinks goes on bluer on me anyway). I just wish the package is a little fancier....because I have that weird rule to only pay higher price when the tube is pretty....

    1. Orange/coral is definitely a new love for me, but I totally share lipstick texture finish preference with you. I received the Canmake goodies and I couldn't be happier. Thank you and your reviews! :)
I also agree with you and the packaging since we have so many good and humble options (heck, Japanese drugstore things are as pretty). The DL lipstick tube is very NARS (pre Audacious), modern and chic, but I prefer slimmer rounder lipstick cases.

  10. Beautiful as always, Lena. Textures like this are so much more wearable than those really pigmented opaque in one swipe lipsticks. Both have their appeal, but these sheerer shiny ones are easy every day lipsticks, right?

    1. Thank you, Lily! <3
Lipstick finish is so important. For me, the color has to mesh well with my own lip color. Which is why I think I like sheer lipsticks better than opaque ones. I don't think I could have pulled it off it was completely opaque. It still has a nice color clarity and pigmentation. :)

  11. Ooh, what a pretty pair of pinky reds! I've yet to try anything from the brand, but you keep tempting me!

    1. I like DL Naked polish (best nude polish, ever) and her glitters are really interesting. I like that she carefully introduced a handful of easy-to-wear lipsticks with great formula. Try a set if you're inclined. I think you'd like!

  13. It's great the lipstick was the full sized product of the two since it worked out so well. I would definitely not describe that shade as fuchsia since it has a fair amount of red but it certainly looks lovely on you Lena!

    1. Thanks, Rowena. :) The stock image is a bit misleading as well. I'm actually glad that Sexy Back is more of a reddish berry. Much easier to pull off, imho.
