Review, Swatch - Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation, Very Light Ivory (100)

I have been very lucky with foundation this year. Currently I have four foundations in rotation, and they are all great for different purposes.
I bought Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation because I was initially intrigued by this review and hugely enabled by this blogofriend later on. I mean, I can't recall the last time when I bought a foundation because I was actually in need of a new one, but I sure am glad that I made this impulse buy that seemed unnecessary at first, because Shiseido Sheer and Perfect is one of the best "daily" foundations I've encountered!
Much thanks to these friends, and I only hope I can pay it forward. ;)

Very Light Ivory (100)

I adore this simple and chic packaging.
It looks huge(?) in the picture, but mind you I have small hands. :)

The price point is really great ($35 for 1 oz), and I suspect this is thanks to the light plastic bottle, which makes me wonder if we are paying at least $10 each for those fancy ones made of glass.

It is virtually spill-free and dispenses a perfect amount by gently squeezing the bottle.
It is also light and travel-friendly, so I wouldn't hesitate to pack this for a trip.

Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation Very Light Ivory Swatch
It was another blind unswatched internet purchase, but I lucked out with the color choice as well.
Very Light Ivory (100) is an excellent match for my skin tone, and surprisingly it is much yellow-based than I'd expect from something in the "ivory" color group. This is a good thing in my book, by the way.

Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation Very Light Ivory swatch comparison
Shiseido Sheer and Perfection foundation is in a liquid gel formula that reminds me of L'Oreal Magic Nude Liquid Powder Makeup (reviewed here).
Sheer and Perfect has a slightly thicker consistency and it is darker than the L'Oreal when swatched on my arm.
Surprisingly, though, Sheer and Perfect is a brighter and better color on my face where L'Oreal Magic Nude appears darker and mismatched.
Is this some sort of foundation magic? I do not know.

As I said before, Shiseido Sheer and Perfect Foundation is just perfect for daily use.
I would have preferred it fragrance-free, but that is me trying really hard to nitpick because the light floral scent doesn't really bother me at all.
Instead, there are so many other things to like about this humble yet awesome foundation.

* The price is great for the quality
* Packaged in a practical and cute bottle
* Nice color selection with 18 shades
* Broad spectrum sun protection
* Light weight formula with great sheer-to-medium coverage
* Breaks down slowly and prettily(!)
* Easy fingertip application

Honestly, my most recent purchase, Koh Gen Do Moisture Foundation is amazing and best overall, but is expensive. My Shu Uemura foundation provides the most beautiful glowing complexion, but is not suitable to use in hot weather.
On the other hand, I easily see myself wearing Shisiedo Sheer and Perfect all year round. I might say it is a congeniality foundation that would get along well with many girls.
I would highly recommend this if you are in the market for light coverage foundation.

  2. Hey Lena, this kinda reminds me of Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet! I might have to take a closer look when I run out of that one. I like foundations I can work with my fingers!

    1. Maybe you'r right! I remember your review on the Chanel. If this one is close to the Chanel, it is much economical. Nonetheless it is a great foundation. :)

  4. The packaging and the texture is a lot like the Chanel Aqua Lumiere. I am almost out of that and thanks for your review, I think I will pick this up next.

    1. I thought Shiseido Sheer and Perfect goes on a tad more evenly than the Aqua Lumiere. Would love to hear about your thoughts. Let me know. :)

  5. Haha, thanks for the shoutout, Lena! I have to review this, too, but I hate foundation reviews...they take so long for me to write and take the photos for! I would have to agree that it is a good all-around foundation.

This is just perfect for busy mornings, too. I love how easy it is to blend in. :)

  6. I'll have to check this one out. I have a couple of foundations that I like, but nothing that I wouldn't be willing to ditch should I find the perfect one. The price point on this one is especially attracting me. My Guerlain one that I like is more than $60/bottle :(

    1. Nowadays foundation prices are so ridiculous. Everything is over $50 if it's a high-end. I was pleasantly surprised by the affordability and its performance, of course. This is a great light-weight foundation for everyday use. Hope you like it, too. :)

  7. That's strange that the one that appears lighter is actually a bit darker! I'd still love to try the magic foundation but that shiseido one has been one that I've been eyeing! I love the consistency and I guess great for light easy coverage! I'd love to try it in the future!

    1. I thought so, too! I still don't know why.. My face is pinker than my arm, so the L'Oreal should be a better match theoretically. LOL
Anyway, I'm just glad to have found a perfect everyday foundation for myself. I will repurchase. :)

    1. I think Liz Reductionista briefly reviewed on the black bottle. She thought it covers better but the finish is on the flat side, if I remember it correctly.
Sheer and Perfect covers and evens out really nicely. You might want to sample it out first. :)

You're my foundation reference since you've tried so many different types of foundations and BB creams. ;D

    1. Ooh, and I'm now interested in the Pore Refining foundation! :)
I would be actually happy with Revlon Colorstay for dry skin, for example, but the colors are all wrong. I've been looking more into Asian brands and getting better matches lately.

    1. I think I will get the lightest ochre shade next time. Ivory is closer to my complexion but ochre matches better with my neck. Yeah, but I am getting better and better at blind shopping like this so I am kin of scared! LOL

  13. Really glad that you're loving this! I bet it looks beautiful on you. I ended up giving my bottle to my youngest sister who does not have my skin issues.

And I've been testing more foundations lately and find that hand swatches really aren't enough -- some things do look nothing like what they initially appear when you apply all over the face. I did find that my bottle of Shiseido also swatched darker as well.

The swatch thing is really puzzling for me, too. It seems foundation swatches are even trickier than blushes or lippies. ;)

  14. I've never tried any Shiseido base products myself but I have a few friends that have and they seem to love them! :) Thank you for the review! I wish I would've read this earlier because I've actually just bought the Chanel Perfection Lumiere Velvet as my everyday foundation :(

I'm sure the Chanel Perfection Lumiere is lovely as well. Many people seem to love this! Chanel US offerings for shades are a little off for me in general, but Chanel makes finest formulas. I'd love to swatch it soon to see if there is anything for me. :)

  15. I have no idea why I never stop by a Shiseido counter!!! This foundation with it's SPF would likely be a good option for me. I've recently purchased an SPF compact that I have yet to really try but for my defence I did get it for when I end up outside with no warnings to apply over makeup. This one sounds nice and would probably do good for me this summer. Thanks for the review Lena! :)

    1. Hi Helene :) Glad that you find this review helpful.
I'd still wear a good stable sunscreen, but this foundation would do well when in pinch. You can put on a decent amount since it is quite sheer in consistency, is one thing, which is the most important thing in sunscreen wears. :)

  16. Hey Lena, I tried some Shiseido foundations and they're pretty good. I haven't tried this in particular, but I'm currently loving my RMK and Lunasol foundations. If you can get your hands on them, you should try them. Awesome stuff!

The packaging reminds me of Chanel foundations. This sounds lovely though. Honestly, I haven't tried any makeup from Shiseido yet, only their skincare, but I'm looking into buying their Perfect Refining Foundation. I'm into light face bases lately.

Yes, some other readers have mentioned about the new Chanel foundation compared with this one. I'd have to see if there is a good color match from Chanel, but it is usually difficult and I'm quite happy with this one. ;)
The Perfect Refining Foundation sounds very nice as well. Let us know how you like it!
