Winter Skin Rescue - Simple Does It

Today I like to share some of the most basic skincare items I have been loving lately.
My skin has been misbehaving due to the change of weather and the few new facial products I have bravely tried, but now it is under control much thanks to these simple goodies.

1. Avene Thermal Spring Water
This has been my staple for many years.
I love thermal spring water spray in general, but I like this one the best.
I use it as toner in the morning right before I put on the serum followed by the sunscreen of choice.
Funny thing is that I get used to this after a while and it feels like the spray is not doing anything special, but I feel the difference whenever I go off of this!
This also doubles as a calming agent for me especially after epilating.

2. CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
My favorite basic moisturizer along the lotion version!
It is very rich and mild, perfect to use all over the body (even on face).
These tubes are more expensive compared to the tubs, but I stock up on the tubes whenever they go on sale since they make beautiful hand cream as well.
If you have dry sensitive skin, give this cream and lotion from CeraVe. They are better than Cetaphil, in my opinion.

3. Pure Argan Oil
I bought this to use on my face, but sadly it did not work very well for me.
It feels very light and absorbs fast, but it was not moisturizing enough and more importantly, I did not see any positive change in my face after 2 weeks of use.
However, this gives extra boosts when mixed with my light body lotion.
I usually switch to rich body cream in winter although I prefer how the lotion feels on, but I am still using the same light lotion on my body thanks to this oil.
This Eden Allure brand argan oil is deodorized, so it does not have the usually nutty scent, which is great!

4. Smith's Rosebud Salve
Ah, another old time mate!
I cannot live without this. I don't know how many tins I went through.
I have tried other flavors, but I still find myself coming back to the original.
I always keep this on my nightstand and put it on right before I go to sleep.
Moisturized full lips in the morning guaranteed.
(I use this in between lip swatchings as well. ;p)

5. Bio oil
This was another facial oil that did not do anything for my face.
Plus, the cheap musk scent is a bit too much for me to stomach. I mean, I love musk in general, but not so much in my facial products.
This, however, works as great cuticle oil for me.
I keep this in a mini Seche Vite bottle (completely cleaned), and brush this over my cuticles and wait a bit, then gently push them back.
It is very nourishing and gentle. Thanks to this method, I have very little cuticles to worry about.
I guess any oil would work for that purpose. This oil feels just right in consistency, though.

I think drinking lots of water, using humidifier and wearing gloves are even more important to save our winter skin.
For me, keeping things simple and basic seems to save a lot of trouble as well.

How do you take care of your skin in winter time?
Any remedies for dry irritated skin?

Please feel free to share with me. ;)

  1. Love the simple routine! I tried putting Bio-Oil on my lips but it tasted bad. CeraVe is sort of new in Canada and I wondered if they were good. Now I know. :)

  2. i love CeraVe and always keep lotion and cream around me.
some of the unscented moisturizer still have the ingredient smell but CeraVe has minimal scent to none, which i love!
i personally think they are better than Cetaphil. :)

  3. aww, sad to hear that argain oil doesn't work on you but at least you get to still use it on your body =) My skin has been misbehaving as well since I'm trying out some new products but I guess I have to stop and go back to my usual routine. I definitely agree on keeping up with the hydration as it really helps skin function well =)

  4. it works pretty nicely when mixed with my lotion..so i have no complaints. ;)
sometimes too much adventure takes toll on our skin.
i am going to use my trustee favorites for a while to calm it down. ;)

  5. Wow what a great post! I love Avene thermal water, it is so calming! I've heard quite a lot about the Smith's Rosebud Salve but I haven't tried it myself, it looks great though and the packaging is adorable. Oh how I dislike the scent of bio oil too! I use it on my face but the smell disgusts me, a soapy powdery musky scent, ugh! I'm trying to use all mine up so I don't have to touch it again haha (shame I got the bigger bottle too!) I haven't tried it on my cuticles before but I might give it a go :)

  6. thank you, Karen!
    isn't Avene water spray great??!
the rosebud salve is nothing special if you look into the ingredients but it does wonder for my lips!!!
and i am glad i am not the only one who detest the smell of bio oil.
i am a big must lover but not a big fan of that particular scent. ;-/

  8. moisturizer is the answer!
i just got something rich and emollient. hope that works out for me. ;)

  9. My skin also needs a little more TLC when the weather gets cold. Like you I also run a humidifier and try to drink more water. I use Avene Thermal Spring Water too :) I used to use LRP but I find the Avene is more moist if that makes sense. I've never tried argan oil on my skin but I do swear by pure coconut oil for moisturizing and any skin irritations. When my face is feeling dry, I dab on whole milk or half and half as a mask after cleansing, let it sit for 5 minutes and rinse. It calms redness and my skin is really soft afterwards. My mom taught me that :)

  10. hi Rowena, thanks so much for your tip!
i will try milk and coconut milk soon. they already sound very soothing and nourishing. ;)

    i always make sure to seal the moisture after using thermal water spray. without sealing, our skin will be left even more dry since it takes away the existing moisture when it vaporizes. tricky tricky business this skincare is...;

  11. change of season skincare is the worst for me!sometimes i wipe my skin with a cotton ball dampened with warm milk and wash it off with lukewarm water after a while for moisturising.no cleansing and toning in winter months for me.

    ReplyDelete
  12. a lot of people rave about milk for it's calming effect!
thanks for the tip, Debi! i will try it for myself. ;)

  13. This winter weather has made me have to exfoliate quite a bit. I use Apricot Scrub and the Neutrogena invigorating foaming scrub. I'm in the market for a really good night cream, i sort of want to try out new products. Its nice to see what works for you!

    ReplyDelete
  14. exfoliating is very important, of course!
i just ordered my old favorites. i shall try something new in spring. ;)

  15. All these products sound amazing and great way to combat the winter weather. I have the Rosebud Salve and it really does wonders! Great post! :)

  17. I hoped that the bio oil would be useful, but that's unfortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  18. i don't know..some rave about it but it didn't work for me. ;-/

  19. Rosebud Salve and Seche Vite are my favorite! I have yet to try CeraVe, heard so many good things about it!

    ReplyDelete
  20. CeraVe has a simple yet great line up. i also like their daytime moisturizer with SPF 30. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I agree that this works better on cuticle rather than on face :) I use this on my toes everynight and cover them with socks!

    xx Meryl

  22. that is a great tip! i will try that myself soon. ;) thanks!

  23. I probably have very similar skin type to you, as Argan oil was raved about but did not well for my skin... as for Bio oil, I'm sorry but i can't bear the smell of that product, have resorted to other products for the ever growing bump!

Love the rosebud salve, but i'm still addicted to Carmex cherry flabour and Liz Ardens 8 hr cream. Thanks for your comment sweetpea.

  24. i had such high hopes for argan oil and used it day & night religiously for 2 weeks. nothing happened...
and i agree the bio oil smell could be too much and this is from a musk lover!
EA 8 hr cream is my favorite, too. ;)

  25. I haven't posted one yet hun - it's an Australian brand called Natio!

  28. Hi Lena, I love the Avene water too; I can't say it does anything for sure, but I still use it :-) For winter, I've been using a gentle cleanser and heavy moisturizer!

    ReplyDelete
  29. hi Dovey! ;)
i think i feel the same way about the Avene spray. i am not sure what it does while i am using it but i definitely feel the difference whenever i stop. lolz

    ReplyDelete
  30. I should do a post, too, but I"m kind of experimenting with a bunch of different products at the moment, so it's hard to do a post like this. I need a humidifier!

    ReplyDelete
  31. no more experiment for me at least for a while...i think all natural organic products hate me. T,.T
i just repurchased my old favorites which is my attempt to remedy the result of my curiosity!
humidifiers are pain to clean but they do help. ;)

  32. I think I know by now that Bio Oil does nothing for me either, yet I keep using it just to use up the bottle...

    Sincerely,
    Sabrina

    ReplyDelete
  33. hi Sabrina! :)
that is exactly how i came up with this "cuticle oil" use. i hate to waste a good bottle of oil. ;)
wish i did more for my complexion, though.

  34. oh fantastic. i really like it.

  35. I don't know if I should say I'm lucky or not. I have oily skin and in the winter time, I find my skin not feeling overly dried out. But I still apply extra body lotion (I just use Curel) and yes, drinking lots of water does help.

    ReplyDelete
  36. definitely lucky!
my problem is i am combating with dry skin & clogged pores, which is a hard battle!!!
i've been drinking too much tea and coffee, must drink more water. ;)

  37. koool! i use argan oil (omg it smells soooo goood!!) for my hair but never tried it for my skin at all!! would look into that because my skin has been misbehaving recently too!! one thing that has helped me is the elf mineral powder wash, its really gentle and vitamin c facial serums as well as aloevera!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. i love the nutty comfy smell, too but the problem is that it clashes with my perfume.
i will try using it on my hair as well. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I love Avene thermal water :) I use a thick rose night cream :D

    ReplyDelete
  40. I´ve never heard of some of these products, such as the Smith's Rosebud Salve, and it looks so good and your critic is fantastic, so I´m going to try it! :)

  41. it is basically vaselline with cotton seed oil plus rose perfume, nothing special to think about it, yet it works so well! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Great picks! I love argan oil and I keep rosebud salve in purse. :)

    ReplyDelete
  43. thanks!
i think argan oil has lovely consistency that is good for many things. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Great choices! Rosebud salve is always a must! I also use the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula hand cream, which unfortunately also has that weird musky scent, but it works so well.

    ReplyDelete
  45. when it's really cold and dry, nothing beat the norwegian formula! i think they have the unscented version. hope you find it. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  46. sometimes simplicity is the best! I love the rosebud salve too, I used to use it a lot in high school :)
the avene thermal water is great too! I can see why you love it :D

    ReplyDelete
  47. they are great basics!
i always get curious to try something else but end up regretting it then come back to those. lol

    ReplyDelete
  48. I never thought of using Bio Oil for cuticle. Thanks for a great suggestion! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. you're welcome! i am happy to share. ;)
i am actually glad to find a way to use up this oil. ;p

    ReplyDelete
  50. Great reviews! I remember using Bio Oil for my legs but stopped using it as I found it didn't really do anything for me.

My winter dry skin remedy is Cetaphil Moisturising Cream!

    ReplyDelete
  51. i think that purcellin oil in bio oil is too little in the amount anyway. lolz
if you like the cetaphil cream, you'd like the cerave as well, i think! :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thanks for sharing, Lena! These products do look simple yet effective! I use dry oil on my face all the time in winter, but now come to think of it I should try it on my hands too. The skin on my hands is SUPER dry.

    ReplyDelete
  53. i think i should start wearing gloves more often but i hate wearing hats and gloves!
i sometimes mix the oil with hand cream and it works nicely. :)
