Chanel Les 4 Ombres Multi-Effect Quadra Eyeshadow 248 Tissé Rhapsodie

Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Tissé Rhapsodie is an LE eyeshadow quad from Collection La Perle de Chanel for spring 2015. The whole lineup is on the soft and delicate side (Chanel says it is inpired by "the graceful world of ballet"), and naturally, it hasn't been received that well in the blogging world.
To be honest, I feel a little tired of this mainstream bloggoworld where "audacious and pigmented" is the key word and "sheer and delicate" is often dismissed.
This eyeshadow quad is exactly that - sheer and delicate, which many say "not worth paying for".

I happen to like it a lot as it is.

The pink leans cool and has a froasted finish.
The ivory shade is with a tinge of pale pink and gold.
The medium purple is surprisingly warm when swatched and has a satin finish.
The shimmery taupe is most shimmery and very complex with multi undertones - khaki, gray. and gold.

I don't wet my eyeshadows, so this "multi-effect" does not mean much to me. However, I do like the depths and complexity from this half-baked formulation with minimal powder kick-up.
For vivid wet swatches, visit Temptalia. (According to her, it is fully opaque when swatched wet, but I wouldn't know.)

These are the real life swatches, in my book.
(I swatched them dry over my lightly lotioned arm with the sponge tips included in the quad.)

It is not one of those usual pastel palettes with candy-like hues. I love the hazy dusty quality of each shades, and that is exactly why I decided to get my hands on this quad.
Over a darker cream base, even the pink creates an easy smoky look blending everything so easily. And of course, the darkest shade, the taupe is quite sexy and unique on its own.

It creates rather a decadent look when I used all four shades together, and the warm purple is most pronounced.

  1. Hey Lena, I had a feeling that you'd get along well with this one! I really love it on you! The purple looks so much more purple on your eyes. It's stunning!

    1. Thanks, Sunny!
I initially thought about getting the pink quadra (from the Reverie Parisienne), but ended up with this. I'm glad. (Still want the pink quad, though! LOL)

  2. I prefer sheer formulation as well ( I don't have blending skill ) but I think maybe people dissed it because rich taupe/plum can look dirty /like bruise when they are sheer?

    1. Maybe. I've experienced the same thing with eye shadows with poor quality pigment. (It is the worst with gray and blue shades. It can look so mirky!)
Luckily this isn't the case. It blends beautifully and still keeps the color intensity. :)

I agree, especially when it comes to eyeshadow! Temptalia tends to give eyeshadows lower grades when they're not fully opaque in one swipe, but semi-sheer eyeshadows are a lot easier to work with. The purple in Tisse Rhapsodie reminds me of the darker shade in NARS Habanera, which is also a bit sheer. But I wouldn't want a totally opaque dark plum color!

Anyway, this is a really pretty look. The sheer pastels are perfect for early spring!

    1. I can't always agree with Temptalia's reviews but her swatches are clear and helpful. Funny the color intensities in her look pictures are not even close to her swatches. I myself is much drawn to opaque intense swatches and it is satisfying oddly, but sometimes I wonder if I am misleading my readers by doing so.
I love NARS pressed everything. It is harder in texture but still delivers clear colors. :)

  4. I like this one, I don't mind sheer shadows unless they are chalky!

  5. I totally agree that sheer and delicate shadows aren't usually what people think are the best quality! But to be honest these quads and also many high end japanese brand shadows are sheerer but yet gorgeous. More easy to wear, no difficulties with blending and pairing with other shades and these shadows are just realistically easier for more people to use. I was SOO close to buying a quad at duty free but didn't...now I regret it! *sigh* Love the purple tones in this and I could see how these shades could be deeper and darker with a base/used wet but they are lovely dry too on you!

    1. You said it better than I did! :)
Buttery soft eyeshadows are not my thing at all. I love complex shimmer and easy blendability with many Asian eyeshadows but also I find most pastels are too powdery and blend into nothing. This Chanel quad is not like that. Maybe it is because of the baked formula?
I'd indulge with one of the new Chanel quadras when you get a chance. The ones introduced before have great color payoffs, too. :)

  6. You look great here, Lena. If you like sheer and delicate, then Japanese makeups are right up your alley! They are usually sheer, soft and shimmery. And here in Asia, majority likes sheer and delicate too :-)

I love eyeshadows from Shu Uemura, for example. I guess I like sheer formulation with a harder texture and clear pigment. Some of the asian pastels could be chalky although they look so cute in the pan. Having said that, I am still super jealous that Asian drugstore offerings are so much better than what we get here for the same price here in the U.S. ;-/

    2. So interesting to read how you try to explain something that I was always trying to phrase. I like the same thing that you do. I figured for myself that with a fair skin almost any pigmented shade will look very unnatural and aging, at the same time using very light shades is ok but not the best choice for my high contrast face (white face with chalky powdery eyelids). There must be color, even maybe a dark one, but it should be possible to sheer it out. Also like Nars, Shu Uemura, Suqqu, old baked Chanel formula, Dior Asian LEs, Suqqu, Chicca, Addiction. Some of the Chantecaille and By Terry eyeshadows work too. It took me 2-3 years of trying to conclude it, unfortunately after buying tons of high end palettes. I agree with you that when Temptalia gives a very bad rating to a product it often means that it is sheer, so I always check her "bad" reviews :) The same for the eyeliners, I prefer sheer and shimmery, like Chanel from this year's Asian collection or THREE.

  7. This isn't my favourite of Chanel quads, but I have to say that those purple tones are lovely on you! xo

Tissé Vendome was repromoted for the same collection, which would suit better for your preference. ;)

  8. i agree with you re: the worth paying for point. i think there /needs/ to be a variety of products out there, different formulas, different levels of pigmentations. people's preferences are diverse and its necessary to have products that meets these preferences. so 'not worthing paying for' seems only applicable if an item under performs for what it intends to do. but if it didn't do, what you'd like it to do and isn't what it was meant for in the first place? ...seems like faulty logic to avoid something.

    1. Thanks for pointing that out. For the same reason, I can't stand reviews like "This does not volumize at all" for a lengthening mascara that does not promote no such thing, or "My face turns into oil sleek" for a moisturizing foundation for dry skin.
I do dislike those low quality pastel shades that turns mirky at the end of the day. Luckily this quadra isn't one of them. ;D

  9. It's pretty on you and a very Lena quad! But I can't stand most Chanel products, especially their shadows and I know they've been reformulated but I just won't do it ever again haha. I think the only things I like are the Les Beiges and the blushes. That's it.

I totally understand where you're coming from. It took me a while to appreciate Chanel offerings, especially their eyeshadows. I have to explore their blushes, though! Thanks for reminding me! LOL

The purple shade kind of surprised me because it showed up much warmer and darker than from the pan. All shades go on very smoothly and blend well. ;)

  11. This is a soft, beautiful quad. I don't always want hot magenta pigmented shadows myself, but I need *some* pigment. I also appreciate when a brand specifies that a duo or quad is sheer from the get go. One of my favorite non-pigmented shadows duos is NARS Marie Galante. Something about it is just so magical to me, but it's not a big fave in the blog world due to it's lack of pigment and texture. Ya win some, ya lose some! :)

    1. Oh my God, I did a full post on Marie Galante a while ago, too! And I love it for the reason you just said. I believe I was quite defensive for the duo. LOL. LOL. The duo looks beautiful over a black cream base. That irridescnet shimmer is really something, isn't it? ;-)

  12. It's true - people have different requirements and expectations of eye shadows, and they can't all be rated the same way! We can't always have full-strength ultra-bright UD stuff on our eyes and lips, you know? There's a place for everything! This quad is *perfect* for you!

    1. Well, I even like the old baked formulation so I am sure many would think that I'm talking nonsense. LOL.
There are high quality sheer eyeshadows out there, though, right? Like your pretty Shiseido collection, which is *perfect* for you! :)

  13. I've been eyeing some of these quads but haven't really tried any on so I'm not sure where I stand on the quality issue. But the colours are so pretty and they suit you perfectly. If you like it, end of story. :)

    1. Tisse Venetien has your name written all over, Liz. This one was received very well and many said it's well pigmented with great texture. The baked formulation is certainly debatable depends on preference.
Now Chanel offers free back and forth shipping with lower minium ($50, before it was $125 or something), so I was prepared to return this one if necessary. I'm glad it wasn't the case, though. :)

    2. Ah, you know me well! Tisse Venetien is exactly the one I drooled over most. We can't order from chanel.com in Canada but at least we have a retailer that uses points schemes for freebies. I think I'm going to halt eye shadow purchases for a while but who knows when the time will come? :)

    3. I'd rather have the points for freebies than free shipping. Chanel acts like they are so special (lol), sometimes it is ridiculous. ;p

I haven't tried any Chanel eye shadow quad, none of them have been calling my name until now hehe but I've heard mixed reviews on them. Glad you like this one :D

The purple in this quad did surprise me, too. First of all, it goes on much warmer and darker with basically no shimmer. When used with the pink, it becomes much more pastel, though.
If you want to take advantage of duty free (I know you frequently travel) and get one for yourself, maybe you might grab something introduced before, which has been received better overall. ;)

  15. Didn't expect the purple to be so intense on your eyes at all based on arm swatches! Which is great! It means these shadows are layerable. I don't mind sheer eyeshadows at all as long as they are buildable. :)

This is a beautiful quad that I wouldn't mind having one in my collection. :D

    1. Exactly! They are buildable and the pigment fine quality, imho. It looks more purple when blended with pink, too. :)
You'd wear this quadra beautifully but I also thought about you when I saw the L'Intemporel de Chanel quint! ;p

  16. It looks great on you, and the swatches are incredible! The things that usually puts me off Chanel quads is the high shimmer. The shades are always beautiful though! :) xx

Maybe you dislike the signature backed sheen to the finish. I have a great respect for Chanel's color compositions, and these new ones seem to have nice finish. Not all that shimmery. ;)
