NARS Lip Gloss Bad Education

It is a shame Bad Education didn't make the cut when NARS decided to reformulate their lip gloss range. This complex and universally flattering red should have been at least reincarnated, but I do not see any comparable shade from the current NARS Lager Than Life Lip Gloss lineup.
I only opened my tube recently and do not detect any funky smell or a change in consistency, but please note it is officially a discontinued color. We have to assume it would be at least a year ago when these tubes were manufactured.
Some of the discontinued shades including Bad Education are sold at a ridiculous price on eBay, but you can still get them at $25 on Amazon or Beauty.com if you're interested.

The doe foot applicator is identical to the new one, only it is shorter.
Maybe I'm the only one who stands too close to the mirror when applying lip gloss, but personally I prefer the shorter applicator of the old tube.

Bad Education is an "off-red" with shimmer that is similar to Chanel Émoi (reviewed).
NARS describes it as a "sheer crimson red", and it is slightly warmer and even ambery compared to the Chanel.

Although NARS Lip Gloss formula varies shade by shade, the old one feels more liquid-y and totally non-sticky. The initially glossy finish quickly sets down to a creamy stain.
Bad Education is probably the easiest red I've ever worn. For a red that leans warm, it surprisingly blends in well with my complexion and looks very natural on.
There is this breezy casual quality thanks for the sheer formula. However, the color intensity can be easily controlled. You can layer a few coats for more opacity or wear as a sheer stain.

I don't think I'd repurchase another tube simply because of the shelf life, but I know I'm going to enjoy this attractive red gloss while it lasts.
By the way, I can't really connect "Bad Education" to this harmless red shade. Can you? ;)

  3. It is pretty! I wonder why they didn't include in the new gloss lineup?

    1. Thanks, Tracy!
I only see very bright or vampy rad from the current lineup. They need something like this in the range! ;)

  4. it looks very nice, but rather brownie to me, like a teracota shade.. but still, it looks nice!
I haven't tried any NARS lip glosses and have been wanting to try some! dolcevita and larger than life are both on my wish list. my only problem is, i have another more tempting lip gloss on the list such as : the new chanel one click lip glosses #1stworldproblem xDD

    1. Maybe the swatch photo looks a little browner than what it is, but it is a warm toned red to me.
I think you've mentioned NARS is priced quite high over there, and in that case I'd root for the Chanel one all the way. ;D

  5. This is a very pretty shade although I find it a bit brown which I guess makes it a very natural color on! I prefer a more cherry red that's neutral or cool toned even for an easy to wear red. That's too bad that it doesn't seem to have such a long shelf life! I tend to have glosses around for up to 4 years before I toss them out! Ekk!

    1. I'm sure that it has a normal shelf life but knowing that it was manufactured a long ago kind of makes me not want to purchase another one. ;)
The new NARS gloss seems to be more pigmented with a bit more tackiness from what I've experienced, so make sure to try them before you commit to buy. :)

    1. Agree with Lily! Now I want some. Although I think I can live w/o Bad Education specifically. But it is too bad it got left out of the new lineup. ;(

    2. LIly) Thank you! I've bought more than a few "easy reds" and been wearing them all the time. With neutral eyes, it is very easy to pull off. ;)

Liz) Thanks. :) I was actually surprised to see there are only extravagant reds like BLKR 413 in the line. I see it is "Larger Than Life" but still..

  7. I agree, this shade should have been included. I used to wear a lot of similar colors and they are so classy! Now this one is stunning on your lip shape, very sexy! :)

I'm pretty sure I can find some similar colors but I actually like the formulation a lot, too. I hope my tube doesn't go bad any time soon! ;)

  8. Yeah, why did this get left out? I like easy to wear reds like this! I mean, I like the BOOM ones, too, but ones like this are so flattering!

    1. Now I have the old formulation, I'm not even sure the new thicker consistency is a good thing any more. ;-/
But have you seen the BLKR 413? It has your name written all over. Such a BOOM red. ;D

  9. Gotta giggle at the name! Sometimes I wonder how these companies come up with the name for their products? :D The crimson red here doesn't seem to have nothing to do whatsoever with Bad Education imo. LOL.

It sure looks nice and moisturizing on your lips, though! Looks quite daring in the tube but appears natural on. Did you apply just one coat?

    1. I miss the good old times with simple names! LOL. I also wonder if these naming trend actually created more jobs for copywriters or even a birth of a new profession. ;)

I think I applied one coat - whatever was on the doe foot, no double dipping. It creates nice bitten red look. :)

  10. Don't you just hate it when beauty companies go and discontinue good products? Some of my most loved products have all been discontinued. Boooo!

Bad education looks so good! I wonder how this would look with another application!

    1. I know, right? Yet both Orgasm and Super Orgasm made the cut. So unfair!
If I layer Bad Education, it is more opaque but it looks ultimately bitten (stained) look. It is quite pretty. :)

    1. Hi Jenn ;)
Thanks! Now I'm more into sheer lipsticks than gloss myself, too. Bad Education is one of the few gloss that I still reach for often, though. :)

  12. I got this shade from Sephora before it disappeared but I must have gotten a really bad batch! The cosmetic smell was horrendous, and I had to return it! It swatched really nicely though - it's a beautiful shade, and looks flattering on yellow skintone. However, the smell was too bad!

    1. Oh, I'm glad to hear you were able to return it!
Mine still performs and feels okay compared to the old tubes I had in the past.
Although I find the new ones are fine (I like Priscilla for example), I think I prefer everything about the old ones, and that includes the matte tube and the shorter applicator. ;-)

  13. Perhaps they'll introduce a few more shades sometime in the future? It's funny how some 'new' lines of lip products don't really have a certain set of colours. A notable example for me recently was actually the NARS Audacious line, which doesn't seem to have much in the way of cooler tones, especially in the reds. Obviously, it's not obligatory, but it did stand out to me.

In any case, this gloss is pretty, and I'm glad you have one last tube to enjoy! ^_^

    1. Spot on! I was just thinking about it, too! I think the color range should at least "cover" the spectrum if it consists of that many colors, you know? Too many similar red, berry, nude colors but not enough in between something! ;o

  14. Ooo, another nice product review from you. Love that it has a more liquid texture to it. I hate it when I fall in love with a lipgloss color, but it's sticky and uncomfortable to wear!

Nowadays the formulation is much more important than the pretty color itself. Bad Education satisfy both, and I'm happy with it! :)
