Review - Wantable Makeup Box October

10.16.2013

It is a fascinating idea - opening a box of mystery that potentially contains your favorite things (uhm, makeup!).
I suppose I should allow this excitement and joy to myself, but I haven't been able to commit to any service, yet.
It is simply because I know myself a little better now (at least about my tendency and preference towards makeup items) - that I don't do very well with "samples".
Sampling is a great way to learn about new products and even crucial for some purchases (like perfume or base makeup), but often the tiny flimsy packaged things end up ruining the whole experience.
I myself would prefer to receive full sized items especially if I am to pay for them every month.

If you're like me, Wantable would be a great choice because you will receive a monthly box with full sized makeup.

Here is my Wantable October beauty box.

Just like Liz of Beauty Reductionista, I also thought the box was small to contain five full sized items.
However, this cleverly designed sturdy box does come with the promised goodies, well protected as well!

Before we go on to see what I received in the box, let's gloss over how it works.

*Choose a category (makeup, accessories, intimates or even halloween(LE))
*Answer questions for product match
*Subscribe for $36 a month or purchase a single box for $40
*Receive a box with full sized unique premium brand items

Sounds great enough, but I find these even greater.

*You can skip and cancel anytime
*Free shipping
*You can return if you don't love it

(You can get more information HERE.)

The questions were pretty detailed.
You can tell these were carefully thought out to give customized selections to the subscribers, cause little things like shimmer and glitters matter.
(I think it is fun to answer these anyway, so go over and try it if you have time. ;))

I wanted to be also adventurous, so I limited to just one "dislike" category.

(I don't really "dislike" bronzers, but I almost never use them..)

Here are what I received.
I think my preference was fairly well reflected.
Japonesque smudger brush (like)
Manna Kadar Lipstick Saucy (love)
Brazen Organic Mineral Blush Stunner (love)
michael marcus pencil sharpener (like)
Lise Watier Feline Mascara HD waterproof (like)
Lise Watier Ombre Souffle Supreme in two colors (sample)

Now, here is what I think of the products from the October Wantable box. :)

Lise Watier Ombre Souffle Supreme (Sample)
Six colors are showcased here, but only the middle ones are actual samples.

These shimmery colors indeed go on like souffle.
Very pretty but maybe a little too shimmery and metallic to my likings.

Japonesque Smudger
I am familiar with with brand for high-quality makeup brushes.
The price range is pretty steep for me to consider purchasing, so this is a great way to experience them.

This is a well-made brush.
The bristles are dense and soft. Plus the short handle is very convenient to use.
This will go in my makeup bag. ;)

michael marcus pencil sharpener
At first I thought, "What, two tools in one box? A pencil sharpener..?".
But then I was totally won over by this coolest looking blue thing!

The design of it is quite ingenious.
The longer body gives more leverage and it catches the shavings neatly.
I ended up liking this a lot even wondering if they make one for chubbier pencils.

Lise Watier Feline HD Waterproof Mascara
I am also familiar with this brand and have been wanting to experience them, so I was very excited to receive it.
Plus they listened - I only use waterproof mascara.

I don't know about the packaging, though.
Not particularly convenient to use. (It is slippery to hold and the tube rolls..)
Don't you think it is a little over-dressed for a mascara..?

The brush looks quite standard.
I really like the deep black color of this mascara offers, but it turns out to be just an okay one.
It lengthens and volumizes but not without clumping.
Good thing I did not experience smudging.
I am always eager to try a new mascara, but I doubt I would purchase this for $21.

Brazen Organic Mineral Blush Stunner
This is another item I am happy with.
I love mineral loose powder blush.
I find the packaging is quite cool, too.

Stunner is a shimmery peach pink that would suit most complexions.

Very pretty, right?
Reminds me of the NARS Orgasm.

Manna Kadar Lipstick Saucy
Ok, this is my favorite from the box.
I never heard of the brand, but what a surprise!
This glossy yet intense color goes on hugging my lips.
It feels very light and creamy.

Saucy is a hot pink with a bit of shimmer, but it transforms into something more complex on my lips.
This deserves a separate post for sure. ;)

And, I thought I would put together a "Wantable face" using the products I received. ;)

I did use everything from the box, but not the Saucy lipstick.
Adventurous I may be, but my soul couldn't bear to pair a hot pink with shimmery peach blush. ;p

Overall, the October Wantable makeup box is satisfactory to me.
I think it is worth trying out the box especially if you have been hesitant to commit yourself to subscription boxes for the same reason I have.
If not for yourself, it would make a great gift for anybody who loves makeup.
I am not sure if they allow us to interchange between makeup and accessory boxes for example, but then I would be even more interested in subscribing.

Thanks for reading this long post.
Have you tried wantable?
I would also love to hear your thoughts on subscription box service in general. :)
