Swatch, EOTD - stila Smudge Pot Mini Set

This mini set was introduced in 2009 as a part of the stila holiday collection.
At this rate, I might have to open an "antique cosmetics shop" since I am digging out all my dated makeups lately.
My excuse would be that I only bought this set last year after paying a maked-up price and I am rediscovering it just now.
(This still pops up online but always with marked-up price or not in the complete set. They were pretty much sold out when introduced since it was such a great deal at that time.)

Starry Night
Kitten
Violet
Black

Starry Night - Dark navy blue with golden shimmer
Kitten - Champagne Gold
Violet - Cool blue violet with silver shimmer
Black - Creamy Jet Black

Swatches

They are all very pigmented and go on smoothly except that Starry Night  feels harder and not as easy to blend in as others.

Honestly, I was not very impressed with them in the beginning.
I am not used to using gel eyeliners, and I do not think there are more merits to using them over any good waterproof eyeliner since nothing lasts on my lower waterlines anyway.
Gel eyeliner requires brush application, which means more work for me, too!

However, I was recently introduced to the concept of using cream type of colors as eye makeup base, and that was when these little gems came back in the picture.
They may not last on my waterlines, but when used on my eyelids, the colors simply would not budge.
They literally last all day long and It is wonderful to pair them with sheer colors like NARS Marie Galante.

stila smudge pots set in maybe too quickly, so it is not always easy to create a smooth base without the harsh edge. I have to work fast and use the right kind of tools.
I find a small regular eyeshadow brush works best for me but I still am searching for an easier method to work with these colors.
If you have any tips for great applications, I am all ears. ;)

Do you have stila smudge pots?
What is your favorite way of using them?

Thanks for looking.
Wish everyone a wonderful new week. :)

  2. wow, violet looks so pretty! Love your eye makeup here a lot. I really like using base products for my shu glitters, they look extra pretty then but for eyeshadows, I think it is a nice way to change the actual colour a bit or just make them pop (uh, hate that word :D).

  8. I don't have any stila smudge pots. I've never experimented with gel liners. Hmmm, well you did a fantastic job with the application of them Lena. It's always frustrating when something takes longer to do.

germany seems to be a country that makes great pencil eyeliners in general. all my good eyeliners are made in germany! ;D

  14. if you like the color of kitten, try the original powder eyeshadow. i have this as well and i think it is one of the prettiest and most versatile highlighter shade. easier to control than the smudge pot version as well. ;)

  15. i love kitten eyeshadow, too!
it's quite easy to overdo with this uber shimmery color, but it is a must have for me. ;)

  18. yes! violet is my favorite, actually. :)
i can't believe i didn't use eyeshadow base before. i mean i use primer like too faced shadow insurance, but adding cream colors adds more oomph to the looks!

  19. thank you, Sunny! :)
i'd recommend kitten in original powder eyeshadow form if you like the color. it is really pretty and easier to control!

  24. This is a lovely look. It's good that you were able to transition these as an eye makeup base when they didn't work as well on you as liners. I stay away from gel liners cause I have trouble applying them O_o

  25. oh i am glad i am not the only on who has trouble with gel liners. hehe
i am not very fond of the idea of having to use brush, either.
but it's also true some people wouldn't use anything else! :)

  27. I can't pull off blue, for some reason it looks off on me, but looks awesome on you and you did it nicely!

  28. i really like stila eyeshadows in general.
if you like Kitten, do try the original eyeshadow first. it is so gorgeous and way easier to control than the smudge pot version. ;)

  29. no problem, Oreleona :)
i hopt your elf liners would work as base as well. gold and white would make good eyeshadow base, i think!

  30. thank you. :)
i still have my hopes up to find "the perfect brush (or wand whatever)" for this smudge pots, though.
hybrid eyeshadows like l'oreal infallible is much easier to handle as well. :)

  31. that is the reason i have stayed away from these cream-type shadows...because i would not be able to blend them. it looks really pretty though. i love the look you created.
