I have been wanting to do this editorial look for some time now ever since my blog friend Larie did these beautiful looks inspired by this.
(And she encouraged us to do it! )
Of course, all the models look beautiful and their makeups are stunning but I was particularly attracted to this look.
Maybe I just wanted her shoulders.
(Next life, baby)
It was also a little too much for an everyday look, but I just had another holiday concert which was a perfect occasion to wear this dramatic look.
This is what I came up with.

This color is one of my winter staples.
Some of you already know that I love deep purple polishes, and this one gets my special love for sure.

I must have been so out of the loop that I did not know this lipstick line was introduced in the U.S. a while back.
(I used to be a (self-acclaimed) queen of drugstore makeup..!)
Better late than never, I finally got to try this thanks to the recent drugstore.com sale.
I know I have been more attracted to the higher end lipsticks lately, but this lipstick makes me realize once again that the drugstore brands really have amped up the game.

Unlike the Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte (which I have mixed feelings about..), I love this Glossy Stain!
I think I love everything about it except for the $32 price tag.
The color of my choice, Violet Edition is a perfect dark purple red.
(I might have just found my "Movie Star" lippie! ;o)

I was kindly sent these from OMGNailstirps for reviews.
I have only tried polish strips from Sally Hansen and I have been feeling kinda lukewarm(?) towards these strip types of nail products since.
That is mainly because I am not very into nail arts myself (although I am a nail polish fanatic and love looking at others' creations) and most of these strips are quite expensive for one time use.
They sent me two different designs of foil strips which are supposedly more durable and shiny compared to the polish strips.
I was interested in trying these since they offer many different cute designs at very affordable price.

I had a small performance last night and I feel relieved that it went pretty well despite that I have been sick for the past few days.
It was an ordinary holiday concert concerning a Mozart Mass that I have sung at least twenty times so nothing exciting about the concert itself, but I did have an interesting encounter regarding my makeup and the color contacts of the night.
One of the audience came to the backstage and commented on the concert briefly, then he politely asked about my eye color.
Apparently he never saw any Asian girl with grayish blue eyes before.
He seemed very surprised when I told him it was the color contacts.
(What did he think, I wonder. That my mom is a Persian cat? ;p)
I wanted to share the look I did for the concert and talk about "why I wear makeup (and color contacts)" since I was tagged by the lovely sleep and water not too long ago. ;)

Today I like to share some of the most basic skincare items I have been loving lately.
My skin has been misbehaving due to the change of weather and the few new facial products I have bravely tried, but now it is under control much thanks to these simple goodies.

I actually got mildly upset when L'Oreal bought out Essie and soon after I started seeing Essie retail bottles as well as the L'Oreal polishes with identical colors at drugstores.
I don't really have a rational explanation for my sentiments since Essie still distributes to salons.
Maybe I have seen too many great independent companies got merged into those big global brands, and lost their unique qualities in the end.
Saying all that, I was still glad to find this Essie Carry On retail bottle from a discount store.
I love anything deep and vampy, and this is a purple creme not to mention it was only $3!

This week was very hectic for me, and I feel almost proud having followed it through.
(You would think that working as a freelancer makes you the owner of your own time, but you often find yourself being a slave instead.)
I even cancelled the dinner reservation today and decided to turn in early cause I am feeling a little wobbly.
Still, I wanted to share a quick FOTD with you. It is Friday after all! :)
This is a look I tried a couple days ago wearing Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupe Frivolous Pink.
I did not include an overall look in my previous swatch post, so this would make it up. ;)

I love getting fresh ideas from my fellow bloggers.
Wendy of Blush and Barbells has introduced me to the idea of using the bronzing part of this duo as eyeshadow color, and I must say it is quite brilliant!
I have always liked this duo but now even more so, I thought it deserved a separate post. :)

I prematurely petted myself for not having bought anything on Black Friday but I ended up purchasing the YSL Rouge Volupte Frivolous Pink at the last minute taking (dis)advantage of the 20% off sale.
I was much enabled by the beautiful vamp swatch from Claire's blog recently, and I had wanted to try the Rouge Volupte range for some time. (For this, I blame Stacey's wonderful collection.)
I also got the Gloss Stain in Violet Edition which I will soon talk about in another post.
Initially I wanted to get the legendary Lingerie Pink but chose Frivolous Pink instead after going through tons of swatch pictures.
I do love light pink lipsticks and even think they look good on me, but I just was not sure if I could pull off that light of a pink with chock-full of pigments.
(See Temptalia's swatches HERE)
In short, I am glad I got Frivolous Pink which is also light but much easier to wear (supposedly).
However, I must say I am much torn about the Rouge Volupte range itself.

I am visiting my old favorite nail polishes lately.
Jules is from the Intimate Collection of Zoya (2011 Spring), which I liked so much that I got the whole set.
Despite of being one of the spring colors, Jules actually seems perfect for this Advent time.

In my previous post, I came up with a wearable brown smokey eye look complaining that straight-up black or cold grey colors look too harsh on me.
(Actually, many browns (especially those reddish ones!) make me look like a (crazy;;) drunken woman, so I find them even harder to wear. Let's just put it this way. Brown or grey, we have to find the colors with the "right" undertones. ;) )
Then, I felt weirdly challenged by my own post.
"Why not? What if I warm up the look with pretty pink?"
So this long-forgotten Maybelline eyeshadow quad was dug up from my shadow box.

This is yet another attempt for a wearable smokey eye look.
As much as I love black and grey (my winter outfits basically consist of black and it's variations), I find it quite difficult to wear straight black or stark grey in my makeup looks. They just look too harsh on me.
So I tried dark browns instead.

One of the great beauty blogging joys would be looking at other bloggers swatches and possibly contemplating on another haul.
(Oh, please tell me I am not the only one.)
I have great respect for the bloggers who provide accurate swatches taken under different lighting since this takes much more time and effort.
I myself have not gotten there yet, not to mention that I am still trying to draw straight lines on my arms.
(They always come out crooked no matter! Is everybody using a ruler but me?)
Anyhoo, I am hoping to get better at swatching soon & presenting this collective swatch of my Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks to you. :)

I have noticed lately tarte is referring themselves as "New Blush Authority", and my inner makeup geek giggles a bit imagining NARS flipping out hearing that. ;)
Blush authority or not, I have always wanted to try tarte cheek stain so I finally got one taking advantage of the sale.
I believe this limited edition color TEN came out at least a couple years ago for the tarte's 10 year anniversary.
(I guess the sale price is only proper to think about that.)

I guess I am one of those lucky girls whose hair and nails grow out ridiculously fast.
I usually put on dark colors right after I chop my nails short, wear whatever about a week after, and finally polish them with light colors when they are longest (to the extent that I can tolerate anyway).
And repeat.
(Oh, I file in between.)
Wearing light colors in winter is not as easy.
Although they look lovely in the bottles, light nail polish colors often make my already dry hands look drier and blah.
A shimmer neutral white polish like Ice Ice Baby is a great alternative to the usual sheer lights.

I always make sure to put on moisturizer with sunscreen on my neck area.
(A woman's neck and hands reveal her true age!)
Sometimes my neck reacts more sensitive than my face to some ingredients, so I am always on the lookout for something mild yet effective.
I have recently found this moisturizer with sun protection from DeVita and I have been happily using this everyday on my neck.

I recently realized I did not have any "red" blush in my stash, and that seemed so wrong!
(Yes, I can be genius like that in finding a reason to buy more makeup.)
You would think there are tons of options for the color, but surprisingly enough, it is not so easy to find a good red blush.
tarte Natural Beauty is one of the few available, and it seemed like a perfect choice since I have heard so many good things about the new tarte Amazonian Clay blush line.

"Taupe eyeshadow" would be one of the most fascinating beauty objects of all.
For one thing, I never get tired of looking at different taupe eyeshadow swatches.
And I always find it faschinating how this muddy blah color can add such sophistication to our eye makeup looks.
Well, I love all shades of taupe and own quite a few, but I was convinced that I needed this mysterious one with purple undertone called Lhasa. (I love purple, too.)
Lhasa is a "lavender-gray" according to NARS, but it is definitely more than the simple description.
It even feels unjust for this beautiful shade with complexity.

This is another oldie but goodie.
Even after all these years, I still remember Misa's "Poisoned Passion" (2008 Fall) as one of the best fall collections.
("Toxic Seduction" is also my favorite from the same collection.)
This rather provocatively named polish is an obvious blue shimmer that appears blue regardless the lighting.
It is deep enough but much brighter than Color Club First Looks, which is other dark blue I have worn recently.
It applies fairly easy and covers very well.
I am only wearing one coat topped with Seche Vite.

Today I have a very simple look to share with you.
I usually wear blue eyeshadow with brown color lenses or the opposite (blue contacts with taupe eyeshadow, for example), but I wanted to put brown and taupe together for some reason.
I was afraid I might look totally washed out, but the finished look is surprisingly calmer yet sophisticated.
I even like how my eyes look kinda mean and catty.
(Ah, the joy of makeup..;p)

Browsing the Fragments site was a much pleasurable yet unexpected experience for me.
I have passed by the brick and mortar showroom of Fragments in SoHo, but I did not know they had this fine website for more private viewings as well.
Fragments is a New York based company founded by Janet Goldman in 1984, much like a well-curated gallery for both fine & fashion jewelry.
My idea of a perfect piece of jewelry is to let one's character and charm shine through without exaggerating or overwhelmed by it.
It could be either a shy luster from moonstone or glamorous sparkles from diamonds as long as it is "you".
I often feel that we do not have many options in that sense although there are so many jewelry pieces out there in the market.
I was quite impressed with the variety of the jewelry that Fragments offers while it maintains the unique feel of the niche collections.

I just spotted a new holiday 2012 collection from Revlon called "Just Add Sparkle".
The collection looks quite simple mainly with ColorStay Eyeshadow Quads, some glitter(shimmer) nail polishes and shimmery ColorBurst Lipglosses.
Frankly, not many looked appealing to me, so I just grabbed one lipgloss called "Brilliant Bordeaux".

Actually, I went to a Chanel counter to get the L'Impatiente lipstick from the Holiday 2012 collection.
L'Impatiente was indeed gorgeous, vampy and deep which is all I am about lately, but I hesitated wondering if I really could pull it off because of its matte formulation (Rouge Allure Velvet).
Then the lady showed me Rivoli.
I have heard other bloggers talking about this, but I was shocked to see the actual color.
I swear this is the identical color of the Chanel lipstick I bought from a duty free a long ago although Rivoli was only introduced in 2009.
(I cannot even remember the name since it has been almost a decade. It was the discontinued Hydra Base and I used it up. Yes, back then it was no problem for me. ;p)
Long story short, I paid for Rivoli without having to think twice and came home with it.

Are you tired of my Revlon ColorStay reviews, yet?
Good, cause I have a couple more to go. ;)
I love Revlon lippies and foundations but I have never found a single Revlon mascara that I really liked.

My local drugstore is running a real nice sale on Revlon Colorstay range, so I grabbed some of the new products.
(Ok, that was an excuse. I was plain curious and would have bought them anyway, sale or not.)
This lipstick is not even on the Revlon website, yet.
I just spotted a lipstick full of display that would equally work well for lollipops, and I reacted like a little girl in front of a lollipop stand, of course. ;)
I maybe wrong but I think Revlon is adding this to their core collections since there were 16 (or more) shades in the display.
The color I chose to feed my curiosity is Supermodel (045).

"Liu" (from "Turandot" by G. Puccini) would be one of the most sympathetic operatic characters.
She is certainly not a modern woman if you ask me.
Unrealistic? Most definitely.
(She gives her love, devotion and her own life because this man had smiled upon her once. I mean, Come on! )
However, every woman has a little bit of "Liu" in her heart, and that is why this character speaks to us so dearly.
I myself cannot help but shedding a tear or two whenever I see the opera although I would detest women like Liu in real life (if they ever exist, anyway).
Guerlain has captured this helplessly beautiful character into a makeup palette for the holiday 2012.
I was very excited (and nervous) to create a look using this palette.
Here is my first take on this. :)
She is certainly not a modern woman if you ask me.
Unrealistic? Most definitely.

Ok, I am ready.
Be warned, though.
Once I start with my vampy nails, it will go on all the way to next March at least. ;p
This rich dark navy shimmer looks perfect for a start.

Unlike the other fall makeup collections that I felt underwhelmed about, This Liu Calligraphy Palette made me feel pretty excited.
I had to grab one for myself soon after it showed up in Nordstrom although it does not feel like holiday, yet.
I will talk about this beautiful operatic heroine "Liu" and the opera "Turandot" later on when I present a look post for you (after all, I am a classically trained singer.), but today I am just too excited to show this pretty palette to you. :)

I cannot believe I did not mention this truly gorgeous eyeshadow quad in "My Drugstore Picks" post (which is now edited) cause this is the actual favorite of mine.
I know, I know.
Revlon has retired this range and brought out supposedly better Colorstay quads. (16 hours vs 12 hours, but I will get to that later.)

This mini set was introduced in 2009 as a part of the stila holiday collection.
At this rate, I might have to open an "antique cosmetics shop" since I am digging out all my dated makeups lately.
My excuse would be that I only bought this set last year after paying a maked-up price and I am rediscovering it just now.
(This still pops up online but always with marked-up price or not in the complete set. They were pretty much sold out when introduced since it was such a great deal at that time.)

It has been years since China Glaze introduced this Tiffany blue color and it is now undoubtedly a cult favorite.
I cannot deny the charm of this color (and Audrey, of course ) although I don't think this is the most flattering shade against my skin tone, so only once a year or so, I visit this color and hold my Tiffany box as if this is a ritual or something. ;)

This is my favorite sunscreen of the moment.
For a long time, Sofina Perfect UV had been my holy grail but I think this Biore Bright Face Milk has officially taken the spot.

When I finally decided to get a NARS blush, it was not an easy task to pick the right one.
I wanted to choose something different from all the blushes in my box, not Orgasm of which I already have three (better) dupes.
Enter Oasis.
Compared to other NARS blush names that are quite provocative (starting from Orgasm, Super Orgasm (!), Deep Throat, Sin...you name it.), Oasis sounds (and looks) serene and quiet.
And it is different enough to justify shelling out near $30 for a blush. ;)

Although now I feel somewhat ready to welcome the new season, I am not sure if I want to move onto dark vampy colors just yet.
I saw this bright pinkish plum color while I was sorting through my nail polish box today and thought it would nicely bridge the seasonal (and emotional) gap.
(Ah, what am I saying? It is clearly autumn now. I was wearing my socks today...)

After my initial haul, I just couldn't get enough of the Paul & Joe's sophisticated girly packaging.
(You see I am being honest here? Luckily Paul & Joe products are great in my opinion, but that is just a bonus. ;p)
So I caved in and made another relatively small purchase, this time from beautybay.com.
I think they have better selections since the company is based in UK although shipping took longer than they claim. The price seems reasonable and shipping is free, fyi.

Not that I need more pink makeup, just because....

I just went over to Revlon website to get some product information for this lipstick range, but surprisingly I couldn't find anything!
Maybe they are discontinuing this range trying to focus more on Lip Butters?!?
I still see full displays at local drugstores , but I have this feeling they might go on massive sale soon. -_-;
In any event, I recommend this pretty medium barbie pink shade called Candy Pink. :)
(This lipstick was also featured in my drugstore picks post. )
